The Trying Times

Weekly Note

Retired Official Road Trip Planner Tee

Hey subscriber,
A few days ago, I looked at the calendar and realized we're already well into summer.
When I was working, summer always felt different. Vacations had to be planned around work schedules, projects, and limited time off. There was always a countdown to a trip and then a countdown back to work.
Retirement changed that.
One of the things I've come to appreciate most is the freedom to travel when I want, even if that travel is nothing more than a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a walk through a town I've never visited before.
Travel doesn't have to mean airports, cruise ships, or expensive vacations. Sometimes it's simply getting out of your normal routine and seeing something different.
A few years ago, I decided to travel alone for the first time. I'll admit, I wasn't sure how I would feel about it. But that experience taught me something important: waiting for the perfect circumstances often means never going at all.
If you've ever wondered whether solo travel is right for you, I shared my experience in this video:
👉 Solo Travel in Retirement
Whether you travel across the country or just across town, summer is a good reminder that our time is valuable. The places we've talked about visiting, the experiences we've considered, and the small adventures we've postponed don't automatically happen someday.
Sometimes we have to make the decision to go.

A Quick Update on the Companion

I've also been working on something called the Retired and Trying Companion.
The idea is simple: a place to find a little encouragement, a daily thought, a journal prompt, and a reminder that retirement isn't something we have to figure out alone.
It's still early, but I've been encouraged by the feedback and sign-ups so far.
If you'd like to follow along as it develops and be notified about future updates, you can sign up here:
There is no cost to join the update list. You'll simply be among the first to hear about new features and future plans.
Until next time, I hope you find a little time this summer to explore somewhere new—even if it's only a few miles from home.
