The Trying Times
Weekly Note
The other day I was thinking about something that happens to all of us, but we rarely notice it when it's happening.
Most of us can remember family dinners, holiday gatherings, visits with parents, time with our children when they were young, or even simple routines that were once part of everyday life.
What I can't tell you is when the last one happened.
I remember eating dinner at my mom's house when the whole family would gather around the table. There was always too much food, plenty of laughter, and a lot of conversation.
But I couldn't tell you which dinner was the last one.
I remember going to my daughter's house every week before life changed and schedules got busier. The kids were little then. My grandson and granddaughter would sometimes try to get me to finish whatever they didn't want to eat when their parents weren't looking.
I remember those dinners.
But I couldn't tell you when the last one was.
That's the subject of my next video.
Just the realization that many of the moments that shape our lives don't announce themselves when they're ending. We usually don't know it's the last time until much later.
I think it's a topic many of us can relate to as we get older.
Have You Tried the Companion Yet?
I've also been working on the Retired and Trying Companion.
One feature that doesn't get much attention is the AI conversation tool.
A few people have told me they weren't sure what to ask it, so here are a few ideas:
- Help me create a simple daily routine.
- What are some easy exercises for someone my age?
- I'm feeling lonely since retiring. What can I do?
- How can I reconnect with old friends?
- Give me three things to look forward to this week.
- Help me create a walking plan.
- What are some hobbies I can start for less than $50?
- How do I stay mentally sharp in retirement?
- Help me organize my day.
- What should I do when I feel unmotivated?
You can also just talk to it the way you would a friend:
"I've been feeling stuck lately."
"I'm nervous about getting older."
"I don't know what to do with all this free time."
The AI won't replace real people, but it can sometimes help you think through a problem, organize your thoughts, or simply give you someone to talk with for a few minutes.
If you try it, I'd love your feedback. What did you ask? Was the answer helpful? What would make it better?
As always, thank you for being part of Retired and Trying.
And while you're waiting for the next video, maybe think about this question:
What's something you remember fondly today, but never realized at the time that it would eventually become "the last time"?
